Net Neutrality, Porn, and You.

For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of Net Neutrality; it is the idea that all data is created equal; that your internet provider should not treat any of their traffic differently from any other. This gets interpreted in a myriad of ways, the two most hotly contested of which are these: Privacy and Bias. Think of it like this, if company like, say, Comcast, begins to have opinions about the data they are working to move, it would mean A) they are seeing it(and by extension could be recording it) and B) could slow the flow of information to places that may harbor ideals they disagree with.

Now, regardless of where you stand politically, under the U.S.A.’s newest administration, specifically the new direction the FCC is headed, Net Neutrality is at risk. I don’t think that why a Big Brother style network is bad thing is something that needs explanation, so I’ll gloss over it for now, besides we know you clicked this article for a reason, the three words: Porn, and You.

Currently there are(to my knowledge), only a handful of websites actively working on finding ways to subvert attacks on Net Neutrality; YouPorn, Redtube, and PornHub. They have been working on finding ways to ensure that the data relayed through their servers is inaccessible to outside parties. While the efficacy of what they’re working on is yet to be observed, whats important is that they’re getting the word out, with a series of banners and pop-ups, you know, the kind of thing porn sites are known for, albeit advertising protest against the potential loss of Net Neutrality.

Now don’t misunderstand me here, porn is a weird thing to wear on your sleeve, and a stranger one to take pride in. But, whats key here is that these internet purveyors of pornography are working to fight this “Battle for the Internet“, for you. In a way, this makes a lot of sense, it is in a Porn Sites best interest for you to feel that nobody can access what you’ve been looking at(feet Greg? REALLY?), the safety of an empty internet history isn’t something they want attacked. Their business model relies on you understanding that the nasty shit you jerk your gherkin or flick your bean too, is something nobody knows about unless YOU want them too.

I’m not going to pretend like any business that revolves around selling sex specifically is going to be flawlessly run; while I’m certain plenty of pornography is made under amicable and perfectly business like circumstances, I’m sure the opposite is true as well. Lets be honest, if we picture the process of porn being made I think we’re all envisioning at least one filthy warehouse and a handful of greasy bald-men wearing gold chains. While I can’t speak on how accurate that is, what I’m getting at is that an industry known for its skeeviness, likely cares more about you and your privacy than our governing bodies. Food for thought is all I’m saying.
